Minister of Finance, Basil Rajapaksa has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to release nearly 400 containers of imported essential items, including rations, currently stocked at the Colombo Port, Ceylon Today reports.
Accordingly, large stocks of sugar are reportedly being held at the Port, as several sugar importers are facing issues in clearing the stocks since the value of the US dollar has appreciated against the rupee.
This was revealed during a meeting held between a group of SLPP members and the minister.
The SLPP members had pointed out regarding
a potential shortage of sugar, milk powder and gas within the market, and the likelihood of a price hike.
They have requested Rajapaksa to take all the necessary steps to prevent that from happening.
