Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinl Ranjith and Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thera have filed a Fundamental Rights petition at Supreme Court challenging the deal with US firm regarding Kerawalapitiya LNG power plant.

An agreement was signed with US firm New Fortress Energy Ltd to hand over 40 per cent of shares of Kerawalapitiya power plant.

The petitioners request the SC to issue an order to nullify the Cabinet decision on transferring the shares of the power plant.

Fifty four resondents including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Cabinet members, West Coast Power Limited (WCP) – the owner of the Kerawalapitiya power plant, New Fortress Energy Ltd. and the Attorney General are named in the petition.

The petition states that the Cabinet decision to transfer state owned shares to the US company cannot be justified and they have not taken facts like national security when agreement was signed.
