The Police Constable who caught on camera assaulting two young persons has been interdicted and arrested, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (retired) Sarath Weerasekara said.

According to a video footage circulated on social media yesterday (22), the Constable was seen hitting the two youth repeatedly while verbally assaulting them.

When TNP MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam brought the matter to the attention of Minister Weerasekara he admitted that the assault should have never taken place as Police officers cannot hit civilians.

Weerasekara said that there was an accident taken place in the area and the Police were in the process of noting down the measures of the scene.

While all the vehicles were stopped, those two youth had attempted to cross the scene and that was when the assault had taken place, he said.
