A group of relatives of people who were reported missing during the war had staged a protest against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who had visited the area to declare open the Vavuniya University today.

It is reported that the group had attempted to enter the university and had been prohibited by the Police who had set up roadblocks resulting in a tense situation between the two parties.

The roadblocks had been set up near the Pampamaduwa Army Camp by the Police and the Military to prevent the protest march by the group from entering the university.

The relatives of the missing people had claimed that their children and family members had gone missing during the President’s tenure as the Defence Secretary, adding that they are yet to receive a response from the Government on their whereabouts.

As the protesters had been prevented from entering the university’s premises they had staged a protest for nearly two- hours near the Pampamaduwa Army Camp.

A high-ranking Police official and an official from the President’s Security Unit had offered to allow two people to meet the President, instead of the whole group, to which the protesters had not agreed.
