The Supreme Court today (2) issued an order for the new chairman and members of the Election Commission to be served with notice to appear before the court once again.
This decision was reached by a five-member bench of the Supreme Court. The court’s action comes in response to petitions submitted by various entities, including the National People’s Power (NPP), Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB), the Centre for Policy Alternatives, and the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL).
These petitions sought a declaration that the fundamental human rights of the people were violated due to the failure to conduct the 2023 LG election on 9 March 2023, as originally scheduled.
The court ordered the Election Commission to ensure the timely conduct of the relevant election. The five-member judge bench consisted of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, along with Justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda, Murdu Fernando, and Gamini Amarasekara.
