Two racers involved in Foxhill tragedy, remanded

Two racers who were involved in the Foxhill tragedy in Diyathalawa have been arrested by police. They have been remanded till April 30 following an order issued by Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court.

Sri Lanka Police said they were arrested on charges of dangerous driving, while undergoing treatment in hospital.

The catastrophic accident which occurred yesterday (21) at the Fox Hill Supercross event in Diyatalawa resulted in the deaths of seven people, including four race officials and spectators, one of whom was an eight-year-old girl.

The incident, also left at least 18 others injured and police say three of them are in critical condition.

Fox Hill Supercross is an annual motorsport extravaganza organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, attracting both local and international racing drivers and riders of top rank.

Approximately 100,000 spectators attended the event hosted yesterday.

Police say during the first leg of the day packed with races, a car veered off the track, crashing into a group of spectators and marshalls.

The Army confirmed that the organizers decided to suspend the event as a result of the tragedy.

It is also reported that The Sri Lanka Army has also launched in internal investigation into the accident.
