Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa criticized the national English-language newspaper Daily Mirror and its website this evening following a news report that allegedly misquoted him about illegally issued liquor licences in the country.
The news report was initially published with the headline “A future SJB government will close down liquor shops, taverns: Sajith.” However, after an uproar on X, the headline was changed to “Sajith vows to scrap liquor licences issued as inducements to politicos.”
The Opposition Leader, posting on X, alleged that Daily Mirror’s journalism is a mockery. “(Daily Mirror) deliberately misquoted me and later changed the article, with no correction issued. I said I will cancel liquor licences issued as bribes, not ban liquor stores if we come to power.”
He then took a further dig at the newspaper, claiming, “What I will ban is Daily Mirror from any press briefings.”
