Nine Pakistanis sentenced to 10 years for drug smuggling

Nine Pakistani nationals arrested in 2020 for smuggling a large cache of drugs have been sentenced to ten years in prison by the Colombo High Court.

In a joint raid conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Navy on January 1, 2020, the suspects were apprehended with 581 kg and 34 grams of suspected drugs, including 614 kg of Ice (Methamphetamine).

According to reports from the Government Analyst dated September 28, 2021, the seized drugs were determined to include 491 kg of Ketamine and 471 kg of Methamphetamine.

The accused pleaded guilty during the court proceedings on May 6, 2024, and were subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison. Police are now working to repatriate the suspects to Pakistan to serve their sentences.
