A low-pressure area over the south-west Bay of Bengal is expected to move north-eastward and develop into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal by Friday (24), according to the Meteorology Department.
Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and very rough seas are anticipated in the sea areas around the country, including the south-eastern Arabian Sea and the south-western Bay of Bengal. As a result, naval and fishing communities in these deep-sea areas are advised to avoid venturing out until further notice.
Additionally, the sea areas from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota will experience rough conditions with strong gusty winds up to 70 kmph. Similarly, the sea areas from Kalpitiya to Colombo will see rough seas with gusty winds up to 60 kmph. Naval and fishing communities in these areas are urged to remain vigilant.
Swell waves ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 meters in height are expected to increase in the sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. There is also a possibility of near-shore sea areas from Colombo to Matara via Galle experiencing surges due to swell waves.
