Sri Lanka Railways General Manager N.J. Indipolage reported this evening that a foreign train passenger died after being struck by a tunnel wall while hanging out of the open doorway of a compartment.
The tragic incident occurred around 4 p.m. today as the passenger was travelling from Colombo Fort to Badulla.
The accident took place in tunnel No. 19 between the Nanuoya and Idalgashinna railway stations. The Railway Department has initiated an investigation into the incident. According to the Railways Act, passengers are strongly advised to remain within the train carriage while the train is in motion, as previous incidents have resulted in fatal accidents when passengers leaned out of open doorways or windows.
