Over 25,000 dengue infections have been recorded in the first five months of 2024, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU). Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the NDCU, highlighted the alarming discovery of dengue breeding sites in many schools.
Last year saw nearly 90,000 cases by the end of 2023, with January alone exceeding 10,000 cases this year. Although cases declined in February, March, and April, a slight increase was noted by the end of May, with the risk of further rises due to monsoon rains.
Inspections have revealed 28,310 mosquito breeding sites among 93,874 premises, including nearly one in five schools and 9% in places like tuition classes.
