The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has issued a warning of an islandwide strike due to authorities’ failure to increase the salaries of teachers and principals as promised in Budget 2024.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin announced today that a strike action will be initiated on June 26 if their demands are not addressed. He stated that teachers and principals would report sick and participate in the islandwide strike on the specified date.

The Union is demanding that the Education Minister intervene and allocate the promised Rs. 46 billion for salary hikes this year.

Stalin also announced that all paper marking at marking centers will cease at 1:00 pm tomorrow (June 12). This decision stems from their current receipt of outdated paper marking charges proposed last year.
