Former President Maithripala Sirisena has stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), citing the party’s welfare and that of its members as his motivation.
In a statement to the media in Galle, Sirisena expressed concerns about an ongoing “national conspiracy” aimed at undermining the SLFP. He defended his decision to appoint Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe as Acting Chairman, asserting that there were no other qualified candidates within the party.
Sirisena highlighted the necessity of his resignation in light of legal challenges he faced, including a court case filed against him by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. He stated that failure to resign would have resulted in restrictions preventing SLFP organizers from contesting elections.
Addressing allegations surrounding Rajapakshe’s appointment, Sirisena dismissed claims of financial impropriety, asserting that such accusations were baseless.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media in Anuradhapura, Rajapakshe confirmed his candidacy for the presidential election representing the SLFP and its alliance. He emphasized readiness to face the challenges ahead.
Sirisena’s resignation comes amid heightened political activity in Sri Lanka, with the Poson Poya Day celebrations and the upcoming presidential election dominating public discourse.
