The Constitutional Council has rejected President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s proposal to extend Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam’s term by another six months. The council convened today at the Parliament complex to decide on the service extension.
Although a recommendation for the extension was presented to the Constitutional Council on two previous occasions, the decision was delayed due to legal complexities.
The Constitutional Council meeting was chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. President Wickremesinghe recently proposed the 6-month extension as Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam approaches his retirement on June 26th.
