The Judicial Service Association has raised alarms over deliberate attempts to undermine the credibility of impartial judges in Sri Lanka. This effort to discredit judges, particularly those who have made significant decisions for the judiciary’s integrity, is seen as unfolding in various parts.
In a statement issued on June 19, following remarks by the Minister of Justice in Parliament, the Judicial Service Association expressed grave concerns about unwarranted criticisms directed at the judicial system. These criticisms, according to the association, are calculated attacks driven by dissatisfaction with legal rulings, especially in politically sensitive cases.
The Judicial Service Association, which represents District Judges and Magistrates, emphasized that these attacks are intended to discredit judges personally, thereby undermining their courage and impartiality. This tactic aims to weaken the judiciary and make it vulnerable to external manipulation.
The association pointed out that the recent attacks have primarily targeted former Colombo Chief Magistrate and the former Mount Lavinia Magistrate. Moreover, there is an ongoing effort to replace the current Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission through the propagation of falsehoods.
