During a discussion with the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, President Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a warning to the teachers who engaged in sick leave campaign yesterday (26), that if teachers fail to fulfill this duty the government will be compelled to take significant measures.
One such measure under consideration is designating teaching as an essential service, which would mandate teachers’ presence in schools, the President said.
“Education is the foundation of our country’s future, and the presence of teachers in schools, especially during the morning hours, is vital for our children’s learning and development,” said President Wickremesinghe. “If teachers continue to neglect this responsibility, we will have no choice but to declare teaching an essential service to ensure that our students are not deprived of their right to education.”
