Asia Broadcasting Corporation (Pvt) Ltd (ABC Networks) were ordered to pay a record amount of compensation for unlawfully terminating the services of journalist and News 19 founder Nirosh Maithri who had been employed for eight years with Hiru TV.
The court announced that the television channel failed to prove its allegations against the journalist at the time of termination.
The court further ruled that the allegations against the journalist may have been made arbitrarily by the management without any basis.
Accordingly, the court ordered Asia Broadcasting Corporation (Pvt) Ltd (ABC Networks) to pay compensation of Rs. 13.5 million to journalist Nirosh Maithri. The court also stated that there is an appeal period until 2 August for the respondents, but the compensation must be deposited with the court in the meantime.
