Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has informed the house about the Determination of the Supreme Court regarding the Bill titled “Economic Transformation.”
Under Article 121(1) of the Constitution, the Supreme Court conducted a review of the Bill and proposed several amendments to ensure its alignment with constitutional principles.
The Supreme Court’s determination emphasized several critical areas in the Bill that require revision to uphold constitutional integrity. Key recommendations include the deletion of certain clauses deemed inconsistent with constitutional provisions.
Additionally, amendments were proposed to empower the Economic Commission and clarify qualifications and procedural aspects outlined in the Bill. The Supreme Court also highlighted the need to address any inconsistencies between the Bill and the Constitution to ensure legal coherence.
