Japan and Sri Lanka Strengthen Cooperation on Nuclear Disarmament and Global Issues

Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yoko Kamikawa, emphasized Japan’s commitment to advancing towards a world without nuclear weapons during her meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, PC in Tokyo.

The two ministers engaged in a comprehensive discussion on regional affairs, covering East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Ukraine. They agreed on the importance of maintaining close communication between their respective countries.

Minister Kamikawa also encouraged Sri Lanka to expedite its domestic procedures towards the conclusion and early implementation of the Additional Protocol (AP).

On the topic of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), Minister Sabry briefed Minister Kamikawa on Sri Lanka’s progress, challenges, and historical context in advancing women’s social status. He expressed a keen interest in enhancing cooperation with Minister Kamikawa, recognized as a strong advocate for WPS issues.

Both ministers affirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation on global issues, including efforts to strengthen the functions of the United Nations and advocate for Security Council reform.

Minister Sabry expressed optimism about Japan’s role in bridging the gap between the “Global South” and the “Global North,” underscoring expectations for continued collaboration between the two nations.
