A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed at the Supreme Court, seeking an order directing the President to appoint an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Attorney-at-Law R.S.P. Ranasuriya submitted the petition, naming President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Attorney General as respondents.

This development follows a Supreme Court interim order issued on July 24, which prevents Deshabandu Tennakoon from performing duties as the IGP. The order was issued after the Court granted leave to proceed with nine petitions, including one from Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, challenging Tennakoon’s appointment.

The Supreme Court has also directed the President to appoint a suitable person as IGP while the interim order against Tennakoon remains in effect.
