Baby Soap Manufacturer Admits to Quality Violations in Court

A soap manufacturing company that recently entered the market with low-cost baby soaps has admitted in the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court to producing inferior products.

This admission came after the Consumer Affairs Authority conducted an investigation and filed a case regarding the quality of the company’s baby soaps.

The case, which was heard on August 16, revealed that the company had been selling attractively shaped but substandard baby soaps.

A complaint lodged with the Consumer Affairs Authority on May 30 prompted officials to collect samples of the soap from the Pettah area, which were then tested at the Institute of Industrial Technology.

The results showed that the Total Fatty Matter (TFM) value of the soap was only 63%, significantly lower than the 78% required by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute under SLS 547:2009 Specification for Baby Soap.

Despite the company’s packaging claiming compliance with the TFM standard, the test results proved otherwise. Faced with this evidence, the company acknowledged its fault in court.

As a result, the court has mandated the company to cease the sale of all non-compliant baby soap bars and to recall those already on the market.

The Consumer Affairs Authority has also issued a public advisory, urging consumers to exercise caution when purchasing baby soaps from this manufacturer.
